EXCELLENT Based on 57 reviews Jasmine Doddington2025-03-23Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Charles visited my grandmothers very anxious dog yesterday and with me being present thought the session, I can confirm that he was extremely helpful and professional. His advice was tailored specifically to the dog, and after the initial session I feel myself and my grandmother have learnt so much about the dog and how to improve her anxiety over time. saying this, there has already been a significant improvement! thank you! Sandra Newsham2025-03-23Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Charles has been absolutely fantastic. Charles visited an extremely anxious dog yesterday, and since the moment he arrived, I have seen a drastic change in my dogs behaviour, compliance and anxiety. It has brought me a significant amount of reassurance knowing I can walk my dog without being filled with anxiety! He was extremely professional, intelligent and overall very helpful. Charles has openly welcomed any advice for the rest of my dogs life which has also brought me a great sense of peace of mind. I can’t recommend this man enough. Thank you again! David Holt2025-03-04Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. First time using Charles and he was a breath of fresh air. Everything he said made sense and was delivered in a clear, concise and assertive (but not overbearing) way. Main topics covered included dogs jumping up, loose lead training and enforcing pack leadership. Instant results on our two Cockapoo’s. Up to us now to carry on Charles good work. Great to know we can contact Charles at anytime with any concerns we have. Charles passion for training is evident. Thoroughly recommended. Lauren D2025-02-22Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Does not produce any certificates of qualifications when asked, has none listed on his website. One can only conclude that Charles has 0 basic qualifications and training and instead is just using his “experience” - as dog training is an unrelated industry. I’m aware of several dog trainers locally who take on dogs that have had unhelpful ‘training’ from this man. I have also asked him directly what qualifications he has and if he has any, suggested they are listed on his website. I have witnessed other concerned owners do the same - he dodges and doesn’t answer the question every time! I know of several (at least 3/4) dogs which have had their behavioural issues worsen after his advice, which left them to be nervous and scared when even his name mentioned, or owners used command words that were advised by him. At least one of these dogs has now been PTS as a result of his poor advice. Please please, if you consider yourself a dog lover - do not go to this man! Go to a reputable dog trainer who is happy to show evidence of the studying they have undertaken in order to understand the basics of dog biology, development, cognition and behaviour. There are plenty about. Will happily amend my review to neutral if Charles takes the feedback on board - to list any qualifications and accreditations he has, and not make false claims of being the “number 1” trainer in Norfolk and “only needing 1 session” with a dog. Mark Wilson2025-02-16Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We recently engaged Charles Gray Dog Training to help with our two-year-old Staffie’s reactivity and lead-pulling. Over the two sessions we’ve had to date, Charles has shared a handful of key tips and practical guidance and these have made a huge difference both at home and when out and about. Things are still very much a work in progress, but the improvement in our walks has been huge. I can’t recommend Charles highly enough - not only is his advice great, he delivers his sessions in a friendly and approachable way. Thank you so much Charles! Jack Parr2025-02-11Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After being recommended to use Charles we gave him a call to help with our new puppy. We were really impressed with his knowledge and his passion. Would highly recommend Charles to others! Karen Elliott2025-02-09Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently had the pleasure of working with Charles Gray Dog Training of Norwich and couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience. Charles conducted a comprehensive home visit, taking the time to observe both my dog and me Charles, provided invaluable advice on managing my dog’s excitement when leaving the house for walks, a moment that often triggers overexcitement. My dog has outbursts when there is another dog in sigh Charles gave me a personalised three-stage system tailored to my dog’s preferences, we’ve seen significant improvements. Despite the challenges presented by my older dog’s ability to multitask , Charles’s hands-on coaching and constructive feedback have been invaluable. The homework assignments have accelerated our progress, making each walk more enjoyable. Charles’s clear and creative approach addresses both the my concerns and the dog’s needs, he made the training sessions both effective and fun. Oh fun fact, once you are a client, you get ongoing support for the lifetime of your dog. I highly recommend Charles Gray for personalised, one-on-one dog training for improving my relationship with my dog. Jasmine Marsh2025-02-08Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Charles while desperately scrolling on google trying to find someone who would help with my dogs separation anxiety issues. He came to my home to assess my dog and I, and came up with solutions very fast. He spent a long time here explaining what’s been going wrong and what I’ve been doing right. I am now so much more clear on how to train my dog to make him feel secure and safe, ensuring he sees me as the leader. Now I understand fully what to do I can’t wait to start putting the training into action. Even after 24 hours I feel more in control and see the different in my pup. In a 3 hour sessions I have learnt more about dogs, than I have in weeks of puppy classes and online apps! He was brilliant and meticulous. I highly recommend. Holly Arthur2025-02-07Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Charles was really knowledgeable and gave us loads of information and tips. He also explained that he was only on the other end of the phone if we ever needed help. Thanks charles! Lydia Horwitz2025-02-03Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Charles has come to our rescue on a number of occasions now. We have an extremely energetic and over excitable puppy. The first time we reached out to Charles we were really struggling with walking. Our puppy was a big puller, and had grown so much and gotten so strong that I had ended several walks in floods of tears having been dragged around (to the point of having to run after our pup as he’s so strong!). Charles managed to come out to us very quickly, and since that one session on lead walking, walking has become such a joy. Our puppy now walks really nicely by my side. It is such a relief to now be able to enjoy our walks. We called Charles out again more recently as we hit the teenager phase - hard!!! Excessive jumping, testing all our boundaries and just generally chaotic behaviour were becoming another really big problem. Again, Charles managed to get out to us within a couple of days to see what was going on. Charles stayed with us for some time to assess our puppy, and gave us lots of practical advice of things to try, which seem to be working so far. On both occasions he followed up his visits with written notes, links to useful videos to watch and the reassurance that he was only a phone call away. We’d really recommend Charles to anyone who is having issues with their puppy/dog, and we will definitely be using Charles for any future issues we may face. Thanks again Charles!!

Dog Recall Training
Peace of mind that your dog will come when called
Dog recall training is one of the essential skills I teach at Charles Gray Dog Training. It’s all about teaching dogs to return to you when called, no matter the distractions around them. This process strengthens the bond between the dog and its owner, enhances trust and safety, and removes the stress of worrying your dog will run off.
I like to start in a controlled environment where distractions are minimal. I encourage the desired behaviour using positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise. As the dogs become more confident, we gradually transition to more challenging settings, introducing distractions that mimic real-life scenarios.
Dog Lead Training
No more pulling on the lead is a call away
As a dog trainer, I often encounter dogs that pull while walking, and I’ve found that this behaviour frequently stems from overexcitement or a lack of proper lead training. Teaching loose-lead walking techniques can make a world of difference. I emphasise the importance of using the right equipment, like harnesses, which can help promote better behaviour during our walks. Distractions can lead dogs to pull on their leads. I recommend placing something on the ground your dog is eager to reach, such as a favourite toy. When your dog begins to pull towards the toy, stop walking and call them back to you. It is rewarding to see the transformation when the dog and owner feel more connected and comfortable on their daily excursions.
Separation Anxiety
Leave your dog at home without the guilt
As a Norwich-based dog trainer with years of experience, I’ve seen how challenging separation anxiety can be for dogs and their owners. Dogs suffering from this condition often display significant distress when left alone, which can lead to destructive behaviours, vocalisation, and attempts to escape. I’ve found that a combination of strategies can effectively help. Gradual desensitisation is key, where dogs are slowly conditioned to be alone for short periods, gradually increasing the time. Crate training can also be beneficial, providing a safe space when done correctly; creating positive associations with the crate using their favourite toys and bedding is essential. Help with your dog’s separation anxiety is at hand; give us a call.
Dog Jumping Up Training
A calm greeting for you and your guests
I frequently see dogs jumping up on people as a greeting, which many perceive as friendly, but it can be overwhelming, especially with larger breeds. I emphasise teaching alternative greetings and encouraging owners to reward their dogs for sitting or remaining calm when meeting someone. This creates a more pleasant experience for guests and helps dogs learn to express excitement appropriately. Positive reinforcement is key; rewarding calm behaviour with treats or affection reinforces the desired action. In my dog training sessions with reinforcement, we can minimise jumping and develop a respectful way for dogs to connect with others, leading to a rewarding transformation for both dogs and their owners. This common problem is easily fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes your training different from group classes?
My training is 100% one-on-one, allowing personalized focus on your dog without distractions from other dogs. Each session is conducted in your home, ensuring a comfortable environment for effective learning.
How do you tailor the training for each dog?
I begin with an in-depth home visit to understand your dog’s environment and behaviors. From there, I create a customized plan that suits your dog’s personality and specific needs, using proven, humane methods.
What issues can your training help resolve?
My program covers a wide range of challenges, including recall issues, leash pulling, separation anxiety, excessive barking, aggression, hyperactivity, and more. Each plan is designed to eliminate the issues that matter most to you.
What commitment is required from me?
Training success relies on daily reinforcement. I work closely with you to create a realistic plan, and if adjustments are needed, I offer free phone consultations to ensure both you and your dog are on the path to success.
What can I expect from the initial session?
Our journey begins with a 60-90 minute home visit to discuss your goals, observe your dog’s behaviour, and build a customized plan. This foundation helps ensure the training is effective, enjoyable, and tailored to your lifestyle.
What will happen during the training session ?
The session will last for 1.5-2.0 hours and take place in and around your home. During this time, I will have an in-depth discussion with you about the issues you are facing and the dog’s background, including any medical issues. Thereafter I will begin the training with as many members of the household present as possible, so I can teach you the appropriate tips and techniques to use following my visit. The training will also include an explanation of what your dog’s needs are to enable it to have a relaxed and respectful relationship. Thereafter I provide FREE TELEPHONE ADVICE for the duration of the dog’s life. I will of course, gladly return for a second visit but in 90% of cases I only need to see my clients once.
