I work with only a small number of dogs at a time, so each case receives my full focus. My sessions aren’t about the clock — they’re about results. Sometimes that means two or three hours, sometimes it means five, but the aim is always the same: to achieve real progress with your dog in one day.
In most cases, the behaviour you’re struggling with isn’t a training problem — it’s a communication problem. Your dog is doing what makes sense to them given the role they think they’re in. My job is to show you what’s actually going on, give you a simple set of rules and techniques that work in real life, and make sure you leave the session confident enough to maintain it. No gimmicks, no complicated programmes. Just clarity — for you and your dog.
Charles Gray
Professional Dog Trainer Norwich
I’m Charles Gray — Norfolk’s most reviewed dog trainer with over 114 five-star Google reviews. I work with all breeds and all behavioural issues, visiting you at home across Norwich and Norfolk. In most cases I resolve the problem in a single visit. I don’t use treats, gimmicks, or complicated programmes. I give you a simple set of rules that work from day one — and I back everything with a no-quibble guarantee.
Real results. In your home. Usually in a single visit.
If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour, you’re probably exhausted — and you may have already tried things that haven’t worked. What I offer is different. No gimmicks, no complicated programmes, no equipment to buy. Just clear, honest dog training that gets results — usually within hours. All training takes place in and around your home, where your dog’s behaviour is formed and where it can be properly changed.
Visit One
Where the transformation begins — unlimited time (avg. 2.5 hours)
I work directly with your dog while you stay with me throughout, so you understand exactly what’s happening and why. But here’s what makes this different from anything you may have tried before: I don’t just fix the problem in front of you and leave.
I teach you the simple tips and techniques to use once I’ve gone. They’re straightforward enough for anyone to use — whether you’re 9 or 90. They don’t require any extra time with your dog. You’re not being asked to do more — just to interact with your dog in a slightly different way. Most owners are surprised by how simple it is, and how quickly their dog responds.
Visit Two

My guarantee your goal is my goal
In 90% of cases the issue is resolved with one visit, because I teach you, the owner the simple tips and techniques required to manage the issue. If the issue is not resolved after 2 visits, I’ll keep working with you at no additional charge until you have the dog that you wanted and the dog has the owners that it needs.
My passion is getting the outcome you and your dog require, and you’ll never pay more than the stated price.
ASeparation anxiety is one of the most distressing problems for owners — and one of the most commonly misdiagnosed. Most cases aren’t true anxiety. They’re a dog that has assumed the leadership role and genuinely believes it’s responsible for you. When you leave, it panics — not because it’s emotionally fragile, but because it thinks you’re its dependent.
The fix isn’t gradual exposure programmes or leaving a radio on. It’s changing the dog’s understanding of its role in the household. Once that shifts, the behaviour changes — often from the very first session.
Aggression
Most dog trainers in Norwich won’t work with aggressive dogs. It’s my speciality.
Aggression — whether towards other dogs, strangers, or family members — almost always has the same root cause: a dog that believes it’s in charge and is acting accordingly. It’s not a broken dog. It’s a dog doing exactly what a pack leader would do when it perceives a threat.
I address the cause, not the symptom. No muzzle desensitisation programmes, no counter-conditioning protocols. I show you how to change your dog’s understanding of its role, and the aggression resolves as a consequence. I work with all breeds including those other trainers turn away.
Lead Reactivity
As a dog trainer, I often encounter dogs that pull while walking, and I’ve found that this behaviour frequently stems from overexcitement or a lack of proper lead training. It results in reactivity.Teaching loose-lead walking techniques can make a world of difference. I emphasise the importance of using the right equipment, which can help promote better behaviour during our walks. Distractions can lead dogs to pull on their leads.
Jumping Up
I frequently see dogs jumping up on people as a greeting, which many perceive as friendly, but it can be overwhelming, especially with larger breeds. Dogs jump up because they haven’t been given a clear alternative. It’s a status and excitement behaviour — and in most cases, it’s fixed quickly once the owner understands what’s driving it and responds consistently. I’ll show you exactly what to do and why it works. All owners see a difference the same day.
Recall Problems
A dog that won’t come back when called is one of the most stressful problems an owner can face — and one of the most misunderstood. In most cases it isn’t a training failure. It’s a status issue. The dog doesn’t believe it needs to respond to you, because in its mind, you aren’t the one in charge.
I don’t use treats to teach recall. Treat-based recall creates a dog that comes back when it feels like it — or when you happen to have food. What I teach instead is a relationship where your dog responds to you because of who you are, not what you’re carrying. Most owners see a reliable response by the end of the first visit.

Fantastic! We really needed someone to help us with some difficult behaviours with one of our two dogs and Charles just brought out the best in her and explained how our behaviour was creating her behaviours. He's a pleasure to work with. He really explains everything in a relatable way and made it easy for us. It was phenomenal how much of change we witnessed in our dog in just the first 15 minutes of the session. We'd highly recommend!

I was not sure what to expect before Charles arrived. However within 5 minutes of him setting foot in our house he had assessed the problem.
It was nothing like what we had thought. Worse still the cute little bundle of fluff we were worried was a nervous cowardly wreck, well, she thought the exact same of us and had been on high alert, protecting her beta dog parents, from every threat under the sun. Exhausting for poor Margot (the Yorkiepoo)
Within minutes we understood this. Within 2 hours we had a plan to fix the issue, distress our dog and in turn address the so called ‘bad behaviour’. Margot is already much more chilled out.
Everything we were doing wrong seems so obvious now!
Simply excellent stuff from Charles.

Well what can I say about Charles, I got a female Labrador from a breeder who didn’t want her anymore and served her purpose and I thought she was broken wasn’t sure I did the right thing, enter Charles and with a lot of hard work we have brought her round to be a very bonded girl and is doing very well as it’s only been 6weeks I have a long way to go with her but I’m sure we will get there withCharles help, he is so knowledgeable and has taught me and my girl so much to take forward and he is only at the end of the phone or a message to help, I am so pleased I found him and would not hesitate to recommend Charles

Charles visited me in Sydney last week and managed to stop my Great Dane’s pulling on the lead which I had assumed could not be corrected. Charles was kind and clear in his approach with the dog and I saw the results in just a few moments. Thank-you so much for your help Charles. Strongly recommend.

We honestly cannot recommend Charles enough. Hector, our 6 year old black lab had got a big too big for his boots: walking him was a struggle and he was almost in charge! Not now. Although very early days Charles has given us and Hector a new, easy and very intuitive way of working together. Hector is walking beautifully and happily. Charles has helped tune us all up. His session was thorough and very bespoke. Fun and practical. Thank you!

We recently had the pleasure of working with Charles Grey Dog Training to help us with our dog, Winnie, who is a Romanian rescue with reactivity issues specifically toward males. From the moment Charles arrived, he approached the situation with calm confidence and a deep understanding of canine behavior.
Charles took the time to assess Winnie’s needs and gave us practical, easy-to-follow tools and strategies to help manage and improve his reactivity. He was incredibly patient, not just with Winnie, but with us as well—explaining the “why” behind each technique and making sure we felt comfortable and confident putting it into practice.
Thanks to Charles, we now have a much better understanding of how to read Winnie’s signals and how to proactively guide him through difficult situations. We already feel more equipped to continue helping him progress.
We’re very grateful for Charles’s help and highly recommend him to anyone looking for thoughtful, effective, and compassionate dog training

Almost immediate improvement. After now two days a vast improvement in her behaviour and response to directions. She is a working Cocker so that comes with that natural exuberance but is now channeled and easier to cope with.

What makes your training different from group classes?
My training is 100% one-on-one, allowing personalised focus on your dog without distractions from other dogs. Each session is conducted in your home, ensuring a comfortable environment for effective learning.
How do you tailor the training for each dog?
I begin with an in-depth home visit to understand your dog’s environment and behaviours. From there, I create a customised plan that suits your dog’s personality and specific needs, using proven, humane methods.
What issues can your training help resolve?
My program covers a wide range of challenges, including recall issues, leash pulling, separation anxiety, excessive barking, aggression, hyperactivity, and more. Each plan is designed to eliminate the issues that matter most to you.
What commitment is required from me?
Training success relies on daily reinforcement. I work closely with you to create a realistic plan, and if adjustments are needed, I offer free phone consultations to ensure both you and your dog are on the path to success.
What can I expect from the initial session?
Our journey begins with a 2.5-3.0 hour home visit to discuss your goals, observe your dog’s behaviour, and build a customised plan. This foundation helps ensure the training is effective, enjoyable, and tailored to your lifestyle.
What will happen during the training session?
The session will last for 2.5-3.0 hours and take place in and around your home. During this time, I will have an in-depth discussion with you about the issues you are facing and the dog’s background, including any medical issues. Thereafter I will begin the training with as many members of the household present as possible, so I can teach you the appropriate tips and techniques to use following my visit. The training will also include an explanation of what your dog’s needs are to enable it to have a relaxed and respectful relationship. Thereafter I provide FREE TELEPHONE ADVICE for the duration of the dog’s life. I will of course, gladly return for a second visit but in 90% of cases I only need to see my clients once.
