Dog trainer Norwich — I help with any dog and any behavioural issue

I work with only a small number of dogs at a time, so each case receives my full focus. My sessions aren’t about the clock — they’re about results. Sometimes that means two or three hours, sometimes it means five, but the aim is always the same: to achieve real progress with your dog in one day.

Expert Dog Behaviourist

In most cases, the behaviour you’re struggling with isn’t a training problem — it’s a communication problem. Your dog is doing what makes sense to them given the role they think they’re in. My job is to show you what’s actually going on, give you a simple set of rules and techniques that work in real life, and make sure you leave the session confident enough to maintain it. No gimmicks, no complicated programmes. Just clarity — for you and your dog.

Charles Gray

How It Works

Real results. In your home. Usually in a single visit.

If you’re struggling with your dog’s behaviour, you’re probably exhausted — and you may have already tried things that haven’t worked. What I offer is different. No gimmicks, no complicated programmes, no equipment to buy. Just clear, honest dog training that gets results — usually within hours. All training takes place in and around your home, where your dog’s behaviour is formed and where it can be properly changed.

Visit One

Where the transformation begins — unlimited time (avg. 2.5 hours)

I work directly with your dog while you stay with me throughout, so you understand exactly what’s happening and why. But here’s what makes this different from anything you may have tried before: I don’t just fix the problem in front of you and leave.

I teach you the simple tips and techniques to use once I’ve gone. They’re straightforward enough for anyone to use — whether you’re 9 or 90. They don’t require any extra time with your dog. You’re not being asked to do more — just to interact with your dog in a slightly different way. Most owners are surprised by how simple it is, and how quickly their dog responds.

Visit Two

Fine-tuning — unlimited time (avg. 2.5 hours)

Used to build on the progress from visit one. Around 80% of owners don’t need it — but it’s already included in the £450.

My Guarantee

I don’t stop until it’s fixed

If your dog’s issues aren’t resolved after two visits, I will continue working with you at no extra charge until they are. No time limits. No additional fees. I stand behind my results completely.

Ongoing Support

Included — you’re never left on your own

Direct access to me by phone for any questions or issues that come up after training.

What can I help with?

Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of dog owners across Norwich, Norfolk, and the surrounding areas tackle challenges such as:

dog trainer Norwich

I work with all breeds and ages – from energetic young pups to older dogs with long-standing habits.

Paw Icon Separation Anxiety
Chevron Down

ASeparation anxiety is one of the most distressing problems for owners — and one of the most commonly misdiagnosed. Most cases aren’t true anxiety. They’re a dog that has assumed the leadership role and genuinely believes it’s responsible for you. When you leave, it panics — not because it’s emotionally fragile, but because it thinks you’re its dependent.
The fix isn’t gradual exposure programmes or leaving a radio on. It’s changing the dog’s understanding of its role in the household. Once that shifts, the behaviour changes — often from the very first session.

Paw Icon Aggression
Chevron Down

Most dog trainers in Norwich won’t work with aggressive dogs. It’s my speciality.
Aggression — whether towards other dogs, strangers, or family members — almost always has the same root cause: a dog that believes it’s in charge and is acting accordingly. It’s not a broken dog. It’s a dog doing exactly what a pack leader would do when it perceives a threat.
I address the cause, not the symptom. No muzzle desensitisation programmes, no counter-conditioning protocols. I show you how to change your dog’s understanding of its role, and the aggression resolves as a consequence. I work with all breeds including those other trainers turn away.

Paw Icon Lead Reactivity
Chevron Down

As a dog trainer, I often encounter dogs that pull while walking, and I’ve found that this behaviour frequently stems from overexcitement or a lack of proper lead training. It results in reactivity.Teaching loose-lead walking techniques can make a world of difference. I emphasise the importance of using the right equipment, which can help promote better behaviour during our walks. Distractions can lead dogs to pull on their leads.

Paw Icon Jumping Up
Chevron Down

I frequently see dogs jumping up on people as a greeting, which many perceive as friendly, but it can be overwhelming, especially with larger breeds. Dogs jump up because they haven’t been given a clear alternative. It’s a status and excitement behaviour — and in most cases, it’s fixed quickly once the owner understands what’s driving it and responds consistently. I’ll show you exactly what to do and why it works. All owners see a difference the same day.

Paw Icon Recall Problems
Chevron Down

A dog that won’t come back when called is one of the most stressful problems an owner can face — and one of the most misunderstood. In most cases it isn’t a training failure. It’s a status issue. The dog doesn’t believe it needs to respond to you, because in its mind, you aren’t the one in charge.
I don’t use treats to teach recall. Treat-based recall creates a dog that comes back when it feels like it — or when you happen to have food. What I teach instead is a relationship where your dog responds to you because of who you are, not what you’re carrying. Most owners see a reliable response by the end of the first visit.

I first contacted Charles a year ago when I first got my 2 year old Australian Shepherd while living in the UK . His advice and support helped immensely getting him settle in to his new home and owner- both Goji and I learned alot and genuinely changed my life. I now live in New Zealand, and needed help with recall and fine tuning a few other behaviours. Charles organised a video call at short notice and again his advice and guidance was life changing- we are now both living our best life here in NZ. Thanks Charles. I highly recommend you and your very straightforward and clear guidance- the impact is almost immediate

We have had a handful of sessions with Charles now and my only wish is that we would have reached out to him sooner. He not only has helped us give our dog confidence and a second chance at life but has also given us the confidence to keep going too. Thank you Charles.

I can’t say enough good things about Charles. My dog was having issue walking on lead and feeling anxious. After the first session my dog was walking on lead perfectly and walking with much more confidence ! I was then able to carry on with the training techniques Charles taught me and I can now walk my pup without having to worry.

I had a very negative experience with this man. His brusque manner made me feel uncomfortable and his brutal training methods have left my dog traumatised and in need of medical attention. Before you engage with him, ask for his qualifications and credentials. He only seems to have five star reviews on here!. I have written two negative reviews thus far and both have been 'flagged' and needed to be deleted.

We recently adopted a lovely dog from the Dogs Trust. We found we had great difficulty walking her, because of excessive pulling and aggressive behaviour to other dogs. Also she was terrified of the car. We found Charles on line and it is the best decision we ever made. He is a miracle worker, we now have a dog we can walk!!

One visit from Charles and our lives are transformed! Eveything we learned from him has enabled us to to set clear boundaries with Erik, re-train his behaviours and enhance all our lives. Erik was always a good dog, however, he became too domineering and needed to re-learn his place in our pack. We are now confident in continuing to be consistant and clear. I honestly think we needed the training as much as Erik! What I loved most about Charles's intervention, is the fact that there is continuos support and advice either via phone, message or additional visits. Thank you Charles x

We would highly recommend Charles for his clear and patient training sessions with us and our 16 month old cocker spaniel, Maple. She now walks much better on a loose lead on a road walk and is much calmer in the house when she comes back from a walk and settles down straight away. By putting in place all the training tips Charles suggested has helped her become a much calmer dog. We will continue to put all these suggestions in place. Thank you Charles.

Charles visited us a month ago and within a short amount of time assessed that we’d let our dog give herself the job of protecting us. This lead to her being reactive and not looking to us for any instruction. He gave us some simple but clear advice and practical ways to address this along with demonstrating how to achieve loose lead walking and the timing of the training. We’ve seen a marked improvement in her and walking is now a pleasure as she mostly ignores other dogs and people. We are now embarking on the next steps to get the chaotic greeting given to any guests under control! Would highly recommend Charles, he seems to be able to look at the situation and assess the problem so quickly. The training advice given has been invaluable.

I decided to buy my wife a Sprocker Spaniel for her birthday last year! What a challenge he is!! Unfortunately he has some serious resource guarding issues and has bitten multiple times! (He is now 1 years old) We decided to call out for help last week and Charles came to our rescue. I can honestly say from the first moment he saw our puppy, he knew we had our hands full! Charles spent over 3 hours explaining clearly why the behaviour is happening and more importantly how we can change it. He went through all the other issues we reeled off one by one with clear instructions. It has now been a week and I can honestly say our boy is a changed dog. A lot happier, walking to heel on a lead (incredible for a Spaniel). We have had a few other issues which we talked about afterwards, always with good clear advice! It’s worth its weight in gold having Charles in my contacts! I can’t recommend him enough, my only regret is not calling him earlier. 5 star service, thanks Charles.

My training is 100% one-on-one, allowing personalised focus on your dog without distractions from other dogs. Each session is conducted in your home, ensuring a comfortable environment for effective learning.

How do you tailor the training for each dog?
Plus Icon

I begin with an in-depth home visit to understand your dog’s environment and behaviours. From there, I create a customised plan that suits your dog’s personality and specific needs, using proven, humane methods.

What issues can your training help resolve?
Plus Icon

My program covers a wide range of challenges, including recall issues, leash pulling, separation anxiety, excessive barking, aggression, hyperactivity, and more. Each plan is designed to eliminate the issues that matter most to you.

What commitment is required from me?
Plus Icon

Training success relies on daily reinforcement. I work closely with you to create a realistic plan, and if adjustments are needed, I offer free phone consultations to ensure both you and your dog are on the path to success.

What can I expect from the initial session?
Plus Icon

Our journey begins with a 2.0-3.0 hour home visit to discuss your goals, observe your dog’s behaviour, and build a customised plan. This foundation helps ensure the training is effective, enjoyable, and tailored to your lifestyle.

What will happen during the training session?
Plus Icon

The session will last for 2.0-3.0 hours and take place in and around your home. During this time, I will have an in-depth discussion with you about the issues you are facing and the dog’s background, including any medical issues. Thereafter I will begin the training with as many members of the household present as possible, so I can teach you the appropriate tips and techniques to use following my visit. The training will also include an explanation of what your dog’s needs are to enable it to have a relaxed and respectful relationship. Thereafter I provide FREE TELEPHONE ADVICE for the duration of the dog’s life. I will of course, gladly return for a second visit but in 90% of cases I only need to see my clients once.
