Anxiety-driven aggression is often misread as unpredictable or dangerous behaviour. In most cases it’s neither. The dog is reacting from a state of insecurity — it hasn’t been given a clear leadership structure, so it’s managing its own stress the only way it knows how. When I work with these dogs, I’m not treating the anxiety directly. I’m removing the cause of it. A dog that understands its place in the hierarchy, and trusts the owner to handle situations, stops needing to react. The aggression settles because the anxiety settles.

If a dog’s behaviour changes suddenly — becoming snappy or reactive when it wasn’t before — pain or illness should always be ruled out first. I always ask owners about any recent changes in health before I start work. A dog in discomfort will sometimes bite simply because it hurts to be touched in a certain way. That’s not a training problem; that’s a vet visit. Once medical causes are excluded, if the aggression continues, that’s when I step in. In my experience, illness-induced aggression that persists after recovery is nearly always compounded by an underlying pack structure issue that the illness brought to the surface.

Possession aggression — sometimes called resource guarding — is one of the most common issues I see. The dog has assumed the role of decision-maker in the home and believes it has the right to control access to food, toys, or space. This isn’t a training problem. It’s a leadership problem. Once the owner understands how to reclaim that role clearly and calmly, the guarding behaviour disappears — typically within the first visit.
