Dog training

Review of Charles Gray Norwich Dog Trainer. dog trainer Norwich

dog reactivity training Norwich.

Does your dog lunge, bark, or growl at other dogs when out on walks?

Reactivity is one of the most common issues I see — and one of the most misunderstood.
The good news is that with the right approach, you can absolutely help your dog feel calmer and more secure around other dogs.

At Charles Gray Dog Training, I provide behaviour-focused training with owner education, giving you clear, practical techniques that work in real-life situations.

What is Dog Reactivity Training Norwich?

Dog reactivity often looks like aggression, but it’s usually driven by:

Fear or insecurity

Overexcitement

Frustration on the lead

A lack of early socialisation or bad past experiences

The result is the same: walks become stressful, and you’re left feeling anxious about every approaching dog.

You don’t need endless “socialisation sessions” or harsh corrections — what works is changing how your dog feels and how you handle the situation.

Getting started

Training techniques

Every dog is different, that is a fact. No breed is the same, no environment is the same, no personality is the same. The same technique will not work for every single dog, because all dogs respond differently to different stimuli.
This is why at Charles Gray Dog Training, I influence and respect each dog’s different needs and natural reward system, allowing them to learn in a way that is suitable for them and you.

My dog obedience training methods depend on who you are and who your dog is. Remember, they aren’t just an animal. They have personalities, likes and interests. They are our companions, and should be treated with the same respect we want to see in them!

Redirecting Natural Dog Behaviour Instinct

Arrow Down

An effective technique I often share with dog owners is redirecting their natural urge to disobey and lead the pack. Providing plenty of appropriate toys to chew on can save your fingers and clothing from those sharp teeth.
I often recommend specific, durable, and safe toys so that dogs can satisfy their chewing instincts without causing harm on you or others.

Consistency is Key with Obedience Training

Arrow Down

Consistency is key when it comes to training your dogs to be obedient. If I allow playful bite one day but scold the dog the next, it will send mixed signals to the dog on what is allowed and what isn’t.
It’s essential to maintain a steady approach to dog obedience training, reinforcing good behaviour and discouraging injuring across all interactions.

The Role of Patience in Dog Obedience

Arrow Down

Patience is equally important with dog reactivity training Norwich. Every dog learns at their own pace, and it might take some time to grasp the boundaries we’re setting fully. Celebrating the small victories along the way makes the training process fun and engaging for the dog and owner.

In my sessions, I often remind owners that while dog biting or scratching can be frustrating, it’s a phase that can be managed with the proper techniques and a positive mindset.
With dedication and love, we can help our pets grow into the well-behaved companions we aspire for them to be.

I first contacted Charles a year ago when I first got my 2 year old Australian Shepherd while living in the UK . His advice and support helped immensely getting him settle in to his new home and owner- both Goji and I learned alot and genuinely changed my life. I now live in New Zealand, and needed help with recall and fine tuning a few other behaviours. Charles organised a video call at short notice and again his advice and guidance was life changing- we are now both living our best life here in NZ. Thanks Charles. I highly recommend you and your very straightforward and clear guidance- the impact is almost immediate

We have had a handful of sessions with Charles now and my only wish is that we would have reached out to him sooner. He not only has helped us give our dog confidence and a second chance at life but has also given us the confidence to keep going too. Thank you Charles.

I can’t say enough good things about Charles. My dog was having issue walking on lead and feeling anxious. After the first session my dog was walking on lead perfectly and walking with much more confidence ! I was then able to carry on with the training techniques Charles taught me and I can now walk my pup without having to worry.

I had a very negative experience with this man. His brusque manner made me feel uncomfortable and his brutal training methods have left my dog traumatised and in need of medical attention. Before you engage with him, ask for his qualifications and credentials. He only seems to have five star reviews on here!. I have written two negative reviews thus far and both have been 'flagged' and needed to be deleted.

We recently adopted a lovely dog from the Dogs Trust. We found we had great difficulty walking her, because of excessive pulling and aggressive behaviour to other dogs. Also she was terrified of the car. We found Charles on line and it is the best decision we ever made. He is a miracle worker, we now have a dog we can walk!!

One visit from Charles and our lives are transformed! Eveything we learned from him has enabled us to to set clear boundaries with Erik, re-train his behaviours and enhance all our lives. Erik was always a good dog, however, he became too domineering and needed to re-learn his place in our pack. We are now confident in continuing to be consistant and clear. I honestly think we needed the training as much as Erik! What I loved most about Charles's intervention, is the fact that there is continuos support and advice either via phone, message or additional visits. Thank you Charles x

We would highly recommend Charles for his clear and patient training sessions with us and our 16 month old cocker spaniel, Maple. She now walks much better on a loose lead on a road walk and is much calmer in the house when she comes back from a walk and settles down straight away. By putting in place all the training tips Charles suggested has helped her become a much calmer dog. We will continue to put all these suggestions in place. Thank you Charles.

Charles visited us a month ago and within a short amount of time assessed that we’d let our dog give herself the job of protecting us. This lead to her being reactive and not looking to us for any instruction. He gave us some simple but clear advice and practical ways to address this along with demonstrating how to achieve loose lead walking and the timing of the training. We’ve seen a marked improvement in her and walking is now a pleasure as she mostly ignores other dogs and people. We are now embarking on the next steps to get the chaotic greeting given to any guests under control! Would highly recommend Charles, he seems to be able to look at the situation and assess the problem so quickly. The training advice given has been invaluable.

I decided to buy my wife a Sprocker Spaniel for her birthday last year! What a challenge he is!! Unfortunately he has some serious resource guarding issues and has bitten multiple times! (He is now 1 years old) We decided to call out for help last week and Charles came to our rescue. I can honestly say from the first moment he saw our puppy, he knew we had our hands full! Charles spent over 3 hours explaining clearly why the behaviour is happening and more importantly how we can change it. He went through all the other issues we reeled off one by one with clear instructions. It has now been a week and I can honestly say our boy is a changed dog. A lot happier, walking to heel on a lead (incredible for a Spaniel). We have had a few other issues which we talked about afterwards, always with good clear advice! It’s worth its weight in gold having Charles in my contacts! I can’t recommend him enough, my only regret is not calling him earlier. 5 star service, thanks Charles.

What makes your training different from group classes?

My training is 100% one-on-one, allowing personalised focus on your dog without distractions from other dogs. Each session is conducted in your home, ensuring a comfortable environment for effective learning.

How do you tailor the training for each dog?
Plus Icon

I begin with an in-depth home visit to understand your dog’s environment and behaviours. From there, I create a customised plan that suits your dog’s personality and specific needs, using proven, humane methods.

What issues can your training help resolve?
Plus Icon

My program covers a wide range of challenges, including recall issues, leash pulling, separation anxiety, excessive barking, aggression, hyperactivity, and more. Each plan is designed to eliminate the issues that matter most to you.

What commitment is required from me?
Plus Icon

Training success relies on daily reinforcement. I work closely with you to create a realistic plan, and if adjustments are needed, I offer free phone consultations to ensure both you and your dog are on the path to success.

What can I expect from the initial session?
Plus Icon

Our journey begins with a 2.0-3.0 hour home visit to discuss your goals, observe your dog’s behaviour, and build a customised plan. This foundation helps ensure the training is effective, enjoyable, and tailored to your lifestyle.

What will happen during the training session?
Plus Icon

The session will last for 2.0-3.0 hours and take place in and around your home. During this time, I will have an in-depth discussion with you about the issues you are facing and the dog’s background, including any medical issues. Thereafter I will begin the training with as many members of the household present as possible, so I can teach you the appropriate tips and techniques to use following my visit. The training will also include an explanation of what your dog’s needs are to enable it to have a relaxed and respectful relationship. Thereafter I provide FREE TELEPHONE ADVICE for the duration of the dog’s life. I will of course, gladly return for a second visit but in 90% of cases I only need to see my clients once.
