Puppy Training Norwich

At Charles Gray Dog Training, my approach to puppy training classes in Norwich differs from the norm. The sessions are tailored to your puppy’s unique needs. We’ll work together in your home to overcome any problems with your pup’s behaviour, and I will teach you how to overcome what, for many new dog owners, is a very stressful period.

I have broken down in some depth the puppy behaviours that I can help you with through my puppy training in Norwich, but if there is something I have not covered, please call or email me; I am sure I can help you.

Puppy biting and nipping

Arrow Down

As a Norwich-based dog trainer with ten years of experience, I often address a common issue many puppy owners face: biting and nipping. It’s important to understand that these behaviours are completely normal for puppies. They explore the world around them with their mouths, much like human babies do. However, we must guide them toward appropriate behaviours to ensure they grow into well-behaved dogs.

The Importance of Socialisation

Arrow Down

When I work with puppies, I emphasise the importance of socialisation. This means exposing them to various environments, sounds, and other dogs while ensuring these experiences are positive. During playtime, if a puppy starts biting or nipping too hard, I take the opportunity to intervene. I’ll make a high-pitched yelp to mimic how another puppy would react, which helps them understand that they’ve gone too far. If they don’t lessen their biting, I temporarily stop playtime, as this teaches them that biting leads to an end of fun.

Redirecting Natural Instincts

Arrow Down

Another effective technique I share with puppy owners is redirecting this natural urge. Providing plenty of appropriate toys to chew on can save your fingers and clothing from those sharp little teeth. I often recommend specific, durable, and safe toys so that puppies can satisfy their chewing instincts without causing harm.

With puppy training Norwich: Consistency is Key

Arrow Down

Consistency is key. If I allow playful nipping one day but scold the puppy the next, it sends mixed signals to the puppy. It’s essential to maintain a steady approach, reinforcing good behaviour and discouraging biting across all interactions.

The Role of Patience

Arrow Down

Patience is equally important. Every puppy learns at their own pace, and it might take some time to grasp the boundaries we’re setting fully. Celebrating the small victories along the way makes the training process fun and engaging for the puppy and owner.

In my sessions, I often remind owners that while puppy biting can be frustrating, it’s a phase that can be managed with the proper techniques and a positive mindset. With dedication and love, we can help our furry friends grow into the well-behaved companions we aspire for them to be.

Puppy toilet training

Arrow Down

As a dog trainer, puppy toilet training is fundamental in establishing a happy relationship between you and your dog. When I first bring a puppy into my training program, I emphasise the importance of consistency and patience. I established a routine: frequently taking the puppy outside, especially after meals, playtime, and naps. This helps the puppy learn that outside is the appropriate place to relieve itself. I always carry treats and praise to reward the puppy for doing business in the right spot, reinforcing positive behaviour and making the process more enjoyable.

One of the key aspects I’ve learned over the years is that accidents are part of the learning process. Rather than scolding the puppy for mistakes, I encourage owners to remain calm and redirect their efforts towards reinforcing correct behaviour. Setting up designated potty areas in the yard and taking the puppy there after every meal can help create a clear association.
I also educate my clients on paying attention to their pup’s body language, as subtle signals can indicate that they need to go out. Toilet training a puppy might seem daunting at first, but with dedication, consistency, and a little love, it’s a rewarding journey that strengthens the bond between a dog and its owner.

Crate Training for Puppies

Arrow Down

Crate training is a fundamental skill every puppy owner should consider, and I want you to understand how important this step is. As a dog trainer with over 10 years of experience, I’ve seen the transformative effects proper crate training can have on puppies and their owners.
A crate is a haven for your puppy, providing its own space to feel secure and relaxed. Crate training can help reduce anxiety by giving your puppy a comfortable place to retreat to when it feels overwhelmed.

Introducing the Crate Positively

Arrow Down

When introducing a crate to a puppy, I’ve always found it essential to choose the right size. It should be spacious enough for the puppy to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably, but not too large so that they can use it for the toilet.
I start by placing the crate in a familiar, quiet area where the puppy feels safe. I let the puppy explore the crate independently; you can use toys and treats to get them to enter. Initially, I kept the door open to help relieve any apprehension. As they feel more comfortable, I gradually close the door for short periods, rewarding the puppy for calm behaviour.

Establishing a Crate Routine

Arrow Down

Creating a consistent schedule for crate time is key to helping the puppy adapt. I incorporate brief crate time throughout the day, often tying it to activities like feeding or quiet moments.
I maintain a calm demeanour when I place the puppy in the crate or take them out, which helps reduce any anxiety they might feel. I also establish a command like “kennel” or “crate” to signal when it’s time for them to enter. Over time, I build their tolerance for staying in the crate by gradually increasing the duration.

Using the Crate for House Training

Arrow Down

I find that the crate can be an incredibly effective tool for house training. Puppies usually avoid soiling their sleeping area, and I leverage this instinct. I set up a bathroom schedule, taking the puppies out immediately after they exit the crate and rewarding them for doing their business outside. I pay close attention to their behaviours and signals when they need to go.
As the puppy learns to associate the outdoors with bathroom breaks, I gradually extend their time outside the crate, allowing them more freedom while maintaining supervision to prevent accidents.

This structured approach to crate training can help your puppy feel safe and secure while fostering good habits. Puppy training Norwich

How to Lead Train a Puppy

Arrow Down

A widespread problem puppy owners face is lead pulling. As a dog trainer in Norwich, I’ve seen firsthand the many challenges that puppy owners face, and one of the most common hurdles is lead pulling.
This problem can turn an enjoyable walk into a frustrating battle, not just for the owner but for the puppy as well. I have trained many owners to overcome this problem, helping them understand that leading a puppy on a lead isn’t just about control; it’s about building trust and establishing a partnership that enhances their lives.

An easy five stars. Would recommend Charles to anyone. Our cocker spaniel Barney had been pulling on the lead and had some separation anxiety after moving house and a new addition to the family and Charles fixed this within one session. Charles has also come back for more training with Barney (and us!) which is massively appreciated. He is so knowledgable and very good at articulating to us why Barney does what he does and what we can do. Could not recommend enough.

I cannot recommend Charles enough! He had my very nervous, reactive rescue walking to heel and not reacting to dogs by the end of 1 session. More importantly he taught me what I needed to do to achieve this myself, and by the end of the session, she was doing the same with me. I'm so thankful and excited to now be able to walk her without her constantly scanning for danger. She can finally relax, knowing I will protect her. I'm absolutely amazed at how quickly she has learned this when I have been trying for 5 years to do what what was achieved in less than 2 hrs! After the session, I went straight out with my other dog, using what I had learned and had her walking to heel in 5 mins! We also worked on reacting to the doorbell and that was also much improved and I'm confident, now I know what to do, we'll have that issue sorted in no time. Best money I've ever spent. I am so grateful my dog can finally enjoy her walks without fear

I adopted a foreign rescue who I felt totally out of my depth with. I didn't know how to handle his barking at everything outside or how to stop him running rings around me! Thanks to Charles and his calm leadership approach, Obi is really starting to settle in and adjust to routines. I wouldn't have been able to walk him or enjoy the garden with him with the fantastic input from Charles. I would highly recommend him. The fact that he provides ongoing aftercare is an absolute godsend for when other issues crop up. I owe the relationship and bond that's growing between me and my new dog to the support and guidance of Charles. 10/10!!

From the first conversation, Charles gave me hope. We had been advised previously Oswald had separation issues, Charles gave us a different perspective and with his advice and training guidance we have seen an improvement already. It’s ongoing and Oswald seems to be more relaxed and more dog. The best decision I’ve had, was to make that first contact call.

We had Charles come out to meet our 6 year old dachshund who has issues with guarding and defending the house. We started with some helpful lead walking progress and then moved onto our main issue which was the home and barking. The tools Charles gave us have been simple to implement and work with, they were clear and understandable. Mash has been like a different dog in the week since we have been following those tips and tricks. While we aren’t perfect yet he is coming on so well and being consistent with it I think we will keep seeing amazing things. We had somebody he doesn’t know we’ll visit our home today and usually this would cause so much barking & stress for Mash but he calmed quickly and did not mind this person moving around our home and was calm, happy and friendly. Charles as a trainer was clear, easy going and amazing at spotting problems and explaining as he went. I would not hesitate to recommend him for any issues you may have with any dog.

Charles came to us to help with the training of our five month old German Shepherd - she was over-enthusiastic when greeting other dogs and people. He showed us the correct techniques for lead walking and for setting boundaries and within the space of a few minutes, he had her walking calmly by his side. Although this was just one visit, Charles will always be on hand to return for further advice if and when required. We cannot thank him enough for his help and advice.

Charles has been a lifeline for our family. Our traumatised rescue Ludo went from highly reactive to noticeably calmer and more settled in just a few weeks with his method. He’s always on hand for questions and happy to return for refreshers, although rarely needed — real ongoing support, not a one-off fix. Can’t recommend him enough!

I first contacted Charles a year ago when I first got my 2 year old Australian Shepherd while living in the UK . His advice and support helped immensely getting him settle in to his new home and owner- both Goji and I learned alot and genuinely changed my life. I now live in New Zealand, and needed help with recall and fine tuning a few other behaviours. Charles organised a video call at short notice and again his advice and guidance was life changing- we are now both living our best life here in NZ. Thanks Charles. I highly recommend you and your very straightforward and clear guidance- the impact is almost immediate

We have had a handful of sessions with Charles now and my only wish is that we would have reached out to him sooner. He not only has helped us give our dog confidence and a second chance at life but has also given us the confidence to keep going too. Thank you Charles.

I can’t say enough good things about Charles. My dog was having issue walking on lead and feeling anxious. After the first session my dog was walking on lead perfectly and walking with much more confidence ! I was then able to carry on with the training techniques Charles taught me and I can now walk my pup without having to worry.
